>History of Greene County Public Library

The Greene County Library, 120 N. 12th Street, Paragould is housed in the Wright Memorial Library Building. Public library service has been available to the Paragould citizens since 1936 when the Paragould Public Library opened its doors in 1936 over the Trail Blazers Cafe on West Court Street. Through the hard work of Paragould citizens, civic groups and dedicated librarians, the library has grown from a collection of 600 books donated by citizens of Paragould to a collection of 60,000 plus items which include books, videos, audio tapes, CDs and magazines. There is access to the Internet, magazine on-line databases, covering everything from business to health. Computers with Microsoft Office products, such as Excel and Word are also available for in-house use. Copy machines are also available.

In 1951, a one-mill county property tax was passed which was earmarked solely for the library. At that time, the library became the Greene County Library and served all the citizens of Greene County. In 1963, the library joined with Clay County to form the Greene-Clay Regional Library. In 1965, Randolph County joined the system which is now called the Northeast Arkansas Regional Library. All three counties have joined together to form an on-line union catalog that patrons can access from home through any of the libraries' websites. Library cards are free with proof of identity and address. The cards can be used in any of the libraries in Greene, Clay or Randolph Counties. Also, material can be borrowed from any of the libraries in the system through Inter-library loan services and the material will be delivered to the library nearest the patron.

Throughout the year, programs are offered for children and adults of all ages. Information on times and dates can be obtained by calling the library at 236-8711 or checking our website for updates. The Lipscomb - Arkansas Room was established in 1982 when the S.S. Lipscomb Foundation set donated $100,000 to set up an Arkansas History and Genealogy room. This fund is managed by the Arkansas Community Foundation. The Lipscomb room houses material on Arkansas history and a offers a wide range of material and services for genealogy research. Members of the Greene County Historical and Genealogical Society volunteer in the room to help patrons with research questions. With the huge increase in information and the ability of libraries to provide electronic access to patrons of huge databases of information, even those residing in rural areas of Arkansas will be able to locate the information they need for educational and recreational purposes.

The library is open Monday-Thursday from 9 AM to 6 PM, Friday 9 AM to 4 PM, and Saturday 9 AM to 1 PM. The library is closed on holidays. The phone number is
